I grew up in a town that is nothing but chain restaurant and strip mall sprawl. I think this negligent urban planning and complete lack of community was what fueled my eventual interest and involvement in such issues. I was just thinking one day about sad strips next to highways and how they relate to the idea of sacredness of the Earth and respect for the land. Or something.
